The Wells Fargo Championship is a PGA Tour Golf event played every season at the beginning of May at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte and attracted the world’s best players on the tour. It was first played as the Wachovia Championship in 2003 and was called as the Quail Hollow Championship in 2009 and 2010. The tournament prize money in 2017 was $7.5 million and the winners took the $1.35 million.
The competition was finished in a playoff from 2004–06 and 2011–13. In addition, the tournament's tour is more difficult, with 16, 17, and 18, usually called the "green mile", and is usually listed as one of the toughest holes in the PGA Tour. Most of the charity proceeds of the competition benefited from Teach for America. The competition is organized by Champion Education Company.
The competition was played in 2017 at the Eagle Point Golf Club on the Wilmington Coast, and Quail Hollow hosted the PGA Championship in mid-August. In 1950 and 1960 Wilmington hosted the Azalea Open at the Donald Ross-designed Cape Fear Country Club. In 1965, this is a large-scale event for the masters and is part of the city's azalea festival.
