Formerly the event was called the Boca Raton Championship, the event was disappearing after the championship sponsor withdrew from the deal last month. However, AZEK, a Chicago-based manufacturer of low-maintenance residential and commercial construction products, allowed the competition to continue.

A PGA Tour Champions event was held on the Old Course at Broken Sound in 2007. The event was the first full game of the tour and was played in early February, but this year it was moved to late October and became part of the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs. The top 54 players entered the playoffs.

The Champions Tour was shut down for four months after the coronavirus pandemic, tour officials decided to merge the 2020 and 2021 seasons into one season and include all competitions this year. The TimberTech Championship will have 81 players participating in the 54-hole competition from 3-5 November 2023. Due to the COVID-19 concern, there will be no audience.
